The safety of children and young people is being recklessly put at risk by the Coalition Government’s attacks on health and safety laws, the NASUWT told the TUC Congress in Bournemouth.
The NASUWT highlighted the particular risk of children and the school workforce being exposed to asbestos.
In seconding a UCATT motion on occupational diseases, the NASUWT reiterated its call for a strengthening of the Mesothelioma Bill to cover victims of all fatal asbestos-related conditions and ensure that all victims receive their full compensation entitlement.
Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“In the 21st century, it is disgraceful that the lives of children and staff are being put at risk by preventable occupational diseases.
The Coalition Government has consistently sought to portray health and safety as bureaucratic and burdensome for employers, rather than acknowledging the rights of children and working people to a safe environment in which to learn and work."
Graham Dawson, NASUWT Junior Vice President, speaking in support of the motion, said:
“Evidence has pointed to the hugely increased risk children exposed to asbestos have of developing mesothelioma and the impact this has already had upon teachers and school staff who have faced long term exposure.
The only long term solution to protect effectively the health of school staff and pupils is through the structured and managed removal of all asbestos from school buildings and a commitment to robust health and safety legislation.”
